Hayden Jones is a Melbourne jazz singer with a dynamic voice and wealth of experience performing with some of Australia's best jazz musicians. Influenced early by the great Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughan and Mahalia Jackson, Hayden's performance ranges the cool restraint of a Brubeck and Bill Evan's sound to the the driving hard bop and soul jazz grooves of Donald Byrd and Eddie Harris. In his earlier years Hayden studied with jazz vocalist Helen Matthews and Wayne Senior at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts as well as master classes in Melbourne with Sheila Jordan & Mark Murphy.
Originally from Western Australia Hayden moved to live in Fitzroy, Melbourne, in the early 1990s and immediately formed his line-up, Dreamsleep, writing and recording original acid jazz-funk material and performing numerous inner Melbourne residencies including The Royal Derby and The Night Cat. In addition Hayden has been invited to perform at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, the Perth Jazz Festival, the Perth Jazz Society and Fremantle Arts Centre.
In 1997 Hayden recorded his Aria-nominated CD, Whisper Not, with Allan Browne, Nick Haywood, Tim Stevens and Eugene Ball which was engineered and mixed by Mal Stanley at the ABC studios for Classic-FM's jazztrack. Launched at the much-loved (now-defunct) Continental in Prahran, the critically-acclaimed CD featured originals written by Hayden as well as beautifully interpreted standards and ballads.
As band leader, performing as The Hayden Jones Quartet and Bent Prayer, Hayden has worked with Philip Rex, James Sherlock, Doug de Vries, Mark Fitzgibbon, Tony Floyd, Nicky Bomba, Novak Conrad, Jake Mason, Ben Robertson, , Allan Browne, Nick Haywood, Eugene Ball, Tim Stevens, Tamara Murphy, Andrea Keller, Toby Mak, Bob Sedergreen, Russell Holmes, Pete Jeavons, Sam Anning & Niko Schauble,
2010 sees the release of his second astonishing CD, Nine Lives Slipping, recorded with Mark Fitzgibbon, Sam Anning, Eugene Ball & Niko Schauble at Allan Eaton Studios, St Kilda by Ross Cockle & mastered by Philip Rex. To be lauched at the Paris Cat on 19 March 2010 the CD contains originals written by Hayden's partner, De Adams, as well as original lyrics to music by Michael Galeazzi (The Java Quartet, Karma County) & legendary jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard.
