NEW RELEASES

Toby Wren Quartet

Emerging Australian guitarist Toby Wren delivers 7 punchy new originals in his new release featuring world saxophone competition winner, Jamie Oehlers. Everything Must Go is Toby's third release of original compositions and follows 2006's Umlaut. A national tour of Umlaut in 2007 and invitations to play the inaugural Adelaide International Guitar Festival, Palmer St Festival (Townsville), Ambiwerra Festival (Brisbane) and a Northern Rivers tour have kept the group busy. It was on a date at Melbourne's Paris Cat lat last year that Toby first played with Jamie Oehlers and the chemistry was instant.

Recorded in one day in March 2008, Everything Must Go captures all the spontaneity and bristling energy of a group in top form. The original tunes run the gamut of emotion from the scorching Jazz Hands to the spooky blues Eyes Eating Bees and the achingly beautiful title track. On the CD are Toby Wren (guitar) Jamie Oehlers (tenor saxophone), Georgia Weber (double bass) and Joe Marchisella (drumset).

Wren was trained as a composer at the Queensland Conservatorium and has won composition prizes and been a composer in residence of the Queensland Orchestra but his heart belongs to jazz. As a precocious 15 year old he was already performing at Melbourne jazz club Ruby Red's accompanying established artists on the piano. He now calls Brisbane home although he continues to perform around the country at festivals such as the inaugural Adelaide International Guitar Festival as part of the 'Jazz Masters' series. Everything Must Go is his third CD under his own leadership. Toby is currently completing a Masters degree at the Queensland Conservatorium and studying and collaborating with Carnatic (South Indian classical) musicians in Brisbane and Chennai, India.
